Biography Gi Cabot
Henry VII, the king of England, is concerned. The era of great geographic discoveries, as we would say today, walks along the planet with seven -mini steps. Nine years ago, Bartolomeo Diash enveloped the southern tip of Africa - Cape Storms, and went into the Indian ocean. True, he did not go further - cruel storms prevented. Four years ago, Columbus discovered some islands, they say that Asian.
It is quite possible. And recently it became known that, by order of the King of Portugal, a certain Vasco da Gama is equipped with a squadron to reach India around the same Cape Storms. Large events on the seas happen almost annually. He understands who did not have time, he was late. And he did not want to be late. Last year, by the way, the Italian John Cabot, recently settled in Bristol, suggested that he, Henry VII, organize an expedition to India and go there in Western route, as recently carried out Columbus.
Henry VII has accepted the proposal of the Cabot favorably. But he did not like that there, in the south, already closely from the Portuguese and Spaniards, Henry VII did not want to go to this noisy gypsy bazaar. It will not be in Korolevsky. He talked with a cabot, and both came to a consensus - we must go west, but to the north. Indeed, no one has yet walked this way, and then, the path to India blocks the chain of some islands, and there are always straits between the islands.
On that and decided - to the west. We know little about the life of John Cabot. Perhaps even less than about the life of Columbus. Historians suggest that the Cabot was born in Genoa. But, only on the grounds that the document was also preserved in the city that the citizenship of the Republic of Venice was provided in the city of Cabot. And in order to obtain such citizenship, it was necessary to live in Venice for at least 15 years.
The Genoese, the Venetian historically so that passionate Italians offered their services to other crowns. All of them were boiling with passion for adventures, and were ready to serve any king, to take any risk in order to bring overseas gold to their new sovereigns, and at the same time, to also get wealth, power, glory, earth. And all this could only be found in overseas countries.
The lands of the Old World have long been divided. And so they went down in history, and glorious Italian names remained forever in it - Christopher Columbus, America Vespucci, Giovanni Caboto, according to this document, the Cabot and three of his sons received permission to equip up to five ships at their own expense and to swimming in order to search for new lands.
If successful, the Royal treasury will receive a fifth of all possible profits. The Cabot equipped only one small vessel with a displacement of 50 tons, called it Matthew, hired 18 crews, where his son Sebastian entered, and on May 2, John Cabot landed on the shore, hoisted the British king there and declared this land the property of the English crown. Historians did not find out exactly in which place this happened.
But everyone converges that this could only be off the coast of the Labrador Peninsula or the island of Newfoundland. But, in any case, the Cabot was sure that they reached the shores of Asia, and the country of Japan Chijapo is even further. Be that as it may, it is John Cabot that has the honor of the discovery of the mainland, which will then be called North America.
True, the Vikings had already visited those places of years before, but this fact was not known to anyone during the Cabot. In general, for tens of thousands of years, America has been opened by sailors of many nationalities, including the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Arabs, Atlanteans, Japanese, Chinese, examined the coast of Newfoundland Island and went back to England. I, now, amazed at the high speed with which the Cabot crossed the Atlantic.
A month, and ready! We went to X in the same route to catch sea perch off the coast of Newfoundland. So, we crossed the ocean for two weeks. But, not under a sail, but under a diesel engine! It was necessary to hurry, the squadron of Vasco da Gama already furious the Indian ocean. This time, the Cabot was equipped with six ships and hired as many as sailors, some of whom went with Columbus to his first voyage.
In early May, this time, the Cabot was absolutely sure that he would finally find this mysterious country of China, full of spices. However, alas, having reached impassable ice, the Cabot turned south and examined the eastern shores of North America up to a latitude of 38 degrees. On this latitude, the city of Washington is now located. All these lands since then have remained under the English crown.
In the fall of the same, G. struck by failure, the Cabot died in a year in Bristol. Very little is known about the sailing of the Cabot. Everything was terribly classified. Moreover, secrecy was beneficial to both the king and the Cabot himself. Interesting, but, it seems, the Cabot has not lost a single person during his swimming. This is a rare case in the history of such expeditions.
All subsequent centuries, people were looking for the northern path to India. It was believed that it would be shorter. Moreover, the searches went in two directions-to the north-west, among the northern islands of Canada, and to the northeast, along the coast of Siberia. And in the other direction, hundreds of travelers died. The Englishman John Franklin in the city and only the great traveler Rual Amundsen years after the sailing of the Cabot completely passed the northwestern passage from east to west.
He took this trip for three years and he spent three wintering in these polar ice. But, read about this in the following articles of our marine historical dictionary.
